Shark SpeedStyle Hair Dryer Review: Is it worth it?

No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal. This is a particularly good hair dryer for those who want something that doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off in your bathroom.

It can swivel to different angles while moving around your head, and uses the second heat setting to reduce heat damage. Its high performance is backed by the Shark SpeedStyle’s ability to automatically adjust the heat and airflow settings when switching between attachments, recycling this feature from the Shark Style iQ. You can still manually adjust the settings to your liking though, as the hair dryer sports two convenient buttons for airflow and temperature, allowing you to gain complete control over your styling needs.

With heated comb technology, the SmoothStyle dries and styles your hair at the same time. For me, all in all, it took 11 minutes to completely dry my damp hair (it was about 70% dry) and give it a blowout. I was shocked by how fast it was able to dry and style my hair at the same time. While it’s true the Shark FlexStyle can replace a number of your existing hair tools, don’t expect it to save you a lot of space in the process. The main barrel is slim, but it’s long at 11.5 inches, and this is before you add any attachments. The longest attachment is the 6-inch Auto-Wrap curler, which, in use, takes the total length of the styler to a somewhat cumbersome 17.5 inches.

One-minute review

I would have been sold on the speed, the weight, and the quietness alone, but of course, the Shark HyperAir doesn't stop there. I'm a big fan of blow-dryer brushes, and the fact that this comes with an attachment for that is a huge selling point for me. It's essentially three tools in one, and I'm a sucker for a multiuse product. I also noticed that this diffuser gave a bit more definition and volume than my normal routine, yet kept my hair feeling soft. Other diffusers I've tried typically took much longer and didn't work much toward reducing frizz. Plus, curly haired users who want the Airwrap should note that Dyson doesn't make a diffuser attachment, so you won't have the option to diffuse at all with the Airwrap, even if you opt for the set made for curly hair.

Is the Shark FlexStyle Hair Dryer Really a 'Dyson Airwrap Dupe'?

The Shark Style iQ hair dryer features three temperature settings, three speed levels, and a cool-shot function. The first is a concentrator nozzle with an adjustable opening, suitable for a gentle all-over quick-dry; or, when narrowed, it can be used to create a smooth, sleek style. The second is a diffuser, whose extendable prongs ensure the roots, as well as the ends of curly hair, can be dried evenly, reducing the risk of heat damage. To access the standard hair dryer feature, you rotate the top-third of the barrel so that it sits at right angles to the handle. There are then six accessories, including two 1.25-inch curlers, an oval brush, a paddle brush, a diffuser and a styling concentrator that can each be attached to the tip of this barrel. Between them, the dryer and its attachments can curl, straighten, volumize, smooth and define curls, using the diffuser.

When rough-drying, there's no need for an extra attachment, just use the dryer as you normally would. If it's a hairdryer you really want here are a couple of options to consider... In the wider multi-styler market, the FlexStyle’s price is at the higher end of the spectrum. It’s twice the price of the $129 Revamp Progloss Airstyle 6-in-1, and the $110 Remington Pro Hot Air Multi-Styler. In Dyson’s defense, the Airwrap comes with nine accessories as standard and a carry case for storage in all regions. With comfortable grip and a lightweight design, the T3 AirLuxe can create beautiful blowouts.

It took me three tries to get the hang of twisting my hair around the cylindrical-shaped attachment, and once I did, I always find myself turning to this attachment when I’m looking to create a blowout. It's also worth noting that the Shark heated up quite high and the cool shot button took ample time to kick in (at least 10 seconds). Holding the cool shot button once the curl finished wrapping ensured that the temp simmered at the right time and gave good hold, which requires you to hold each curl for about 15 seconds. Former digital deputy beauty director Sophia Panych agrees about the efficiency.

By comparison, the Revlon 2-in-1 delivers almost too much volume at first, without having to use any additional products – and even when the hair does drop, it’s far less noticeable. Using either the oval or paddle brush extended this time a little – 3 minutes and 50 seconds and 4 minutes, respectively – but because both brushes are styling as they dry, this can save  you time in the long-run. All three styling options – the standard dryer, oval and paddle brush – are relatively intuitive in use. Dyson’s made some improvements to its premium hair dryer since its initial launch way back in 2016. If you have the cash to fork out, you’ll be set with this futuristic-looking appliance that packs in the company’s V9 motor for high performance, along with ionizing technology for a smoother finish. The Shark SpeedStyle is great for smooth or natural styles, but you’ll have an easier time curling hair with styling wands like the Shark FlexStyle or the Dyson Airwrap.

She's a graduate of the University of Florida's School of Journalism, with a specialty in magazines and mass communication. In the UK, there is a single £299.99 option which comes with the five attachments as well as storage case. It's a good size for popping into luggage, and even comes with a hand carry case, but it’s a touch on the heavy side. However, its 2.4m cord means that it’ll reach from just about any inconveniently placed outlet to a mirror.

In terms of styling, I twisted the brush away from my face halfway into each section for some loose curls at the ends. The fact that this brush was able to give me a salon-level blowout—without any difficulty—that I've paid professionals to do was mind-blowing to me. Although this method gave our fine hair decent volume to begin, the style didn’t hold; it fell flat within half an hour. To improve the volume and get it to hold longer, we resorted to using the Color Wow Volumizer.

This is no mean feat given its length, and when coupled with its lightweight at just 1.5lbs, makes even the most complex and long-winded styles comfortable to complete. Our only complaint is that, once again, the power pack on the cable adds what feels like an unnecessary amount of bulk when lifting the styler above and around your head. The brand, which is probably best known for its vacuum cleaners, released the HyperAir iQ hair dryer (or the Style iQ hair dryer, outside of the US) at the end of last year. This was followed by two attachments for the dryer to help smooth the hair, or create waves.

This means that if you want to change the direction of your curls, making the style look more natural and bouncy, you have to swap between these two attachments repeatedly. The use of an unlock switch may seem like an unnecessary step, but it prevents the attachments from twisting and moving mid-style – a common complaint of other hair dryers and cheaper multi-stylers we’ve used in the past. Arrow indicators on the barrel help guide setup and use – both in terms of how to rotate the barrel, and how to add and remove attachments. You then use the button at the base of the barrel to cycle between the three heat and three airflow speed settings. The key difference, and the reason for the higher prices of Shark and Dyson multi-stylers, is that both appliances use the Coanda Effect.

The FlexStyle builds on the technology of this dryer, bringing greater versatility to the Shark haircare collection. The FlexStyle is more than just a hair dryer – it’s a versatile styling wand that makes for a great alternative to the much pricier Dyson Airwrap. With similar attachments to the Shark SpeedStyle, this is the one to go for if you want an all-in-one styling and drying device. Shark has designed a sleek and compact hair dryer, although the FlexStyle is a touch smaller when folded into its dryer mode. Also aiding in giving it a modern look is an unique off-white and rose-gold color scheme.
