Shark HyperAir Hair Dryer Review With Photos

Unlike its unwieldy name, the Shark SpeedStyle RapidGloss Finisher & High-Velocity Dryer is a compact hair dryer, making it a good option for travel, so long as you don't mind the extra weight. It can adjust its own temperature and airflow using what Shark calls IQ functionality – a feature that detects which of the five included attachments you’re currently using. It’s good at what it does, but that comes at a price point similar to the Shark FlexStyle, which is a more versatile hair tool. You have curly hairLike many hair dryers, the Shark Style iQ ships with a diffuser. However, it trumps other models on the market with its extendable prongs, which allow those with curly hair to dry their tresses in a way that retains the curl but without subjecting the ends to heat damage. According to our Beauty Lab assessments, Shark's curlers replicated Dyson Airwrap's Coanda effect, creating robust, tighter waves on hair.

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. I love the IQ Styling Concentrator for styling the front pieces of my hair so they frame my face exactly how I want them too. If I just want a rough dry, I often ditch the attachments and this dryer still works great. While many balk at hair styling attachments, calling them frivolous and unnecessary, it feels like the HyperAIR accessories were designed to mitigate all the painpoints that usually come with styling your hair. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market.

Round brush

A wide-tooth comb attachment for curly and coily hair types will be available later this year. For $269.99, you can buy the dryer with the two Auto-Wrap curlers, the oval brush, the styling concentrator and diffuser; or buy the dryer with the two curlers, oval brush, paddle brush and styling concentrator. The former is marketed as being the best combination for curly hair types, while the latter will better suit straight and smooth styles. To minimize heat damage, look for tools that feature multiple temperature settings because high heat isn't always necessary—especially for fine hair types.

To better compare them, I tried the Dyson Airwrap on one side of my hair and the Shark FlexStyle on the other. When it came to the actual styling, the Dyson felt lighter and had more easy-to-use buttons. At its highest heat, the Shark's cool shot button took longer to kick in, but once it did, it locked in hairstyles.

Conversely, when using the standard hair dryer with the barrel rotated, the length reduces to 8.5 inches – which feels far more manageable. The hair dryer offers 1600W of power with three temperature settings and three options for the speed of air flow, which are controlled using the buttons on the back of the barrel. The power button is located on the back of the handle, while on the front of the handle is a cool-shot button that delivers a blast of cold air to set your style. This compact, but powerful blow dryer dries hair fast with minimum heat damage thanks to HyperAIR IQ Technology, which jets out a combination of high-velocity heated air and ionized air. In less techy terms, this means the air comes out very fast and will reduce frizz, improve shine, and leave hair looking silky-smooth. The Dyson Airwrap neither swivels into a hair dryer nor comes with concentrator nozzle — though, it comes with a rough dry/flyaway attachment to get hair partially dry before styling more heavily.

Despite the extra weight, it’s still small enough to neatly pack away into luggage, making it a good travel companion if your flight’s weight allowance allows for it. It might be a mouthful of a name but the SpeedStyle RapidGloss Finisher & High-Velocity Dryer (hereon referred to as the SpeedStyle) has been designed to dry hair with less time and effort. Coming with a selection of five attachments, you can even reduce the amount of frizz in your hair while styling, resulting in glossier looks. However, the Style iQ comes with smarts such as the ability to automatically adjust the air flow and temperature, based on the attachment you’ve connected, to suit the type of style you’re trying to create.

Oval brush

To put the Shark SpeedStyle to the test, I used it every time I washed my hair over a period of eight weeks. To put it through its paces, I swapped between the SpeedStyle’s attachments each time, using a paddle brush and comb to achieve different styles and results. And this is despite the fact that Shark has included cool-touch zones on the dryer and the attachments.

But the most notable feature of the Shark FlexStyle is its lockable, twistable rod to accommodate different hair drying and styling methods. Shark also offers a diffuser attachment equipped with extendable prongs to accommodate all sorts of hair types, which Dyson lacks. Many hair dryers come with (or are compatible with) attachments that allow you to tailor your blow-out experience to your needs. Abergel noted that, for example, using a concentrator nozzle that precisely hits hard-to-reach areas is key to achieving salon-level results. "It concentrates the air and aids in directing the airflow exactly where you want it to go," Abergel previously explained.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Complete

When used on the lowest temperature settings, this increased only to 5 minutes and 8 seconds, making it among the faster hair dryers we’ve tested. Experience the versatility of the Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System, effortlessly transitioning between a powerful, fast hair dryer and a versatile multi-styler with no risk of heat damage. Compact yet powerful, the Shark FlexStyle enables seamless switching from one function to another, allowing you to dry and style like never before.

This concentrated airflow also helps the cuticle of the hair lay flat so that it will be shinier and less frizzy, according to Los Angeles-based hairstylist Kiki Heitkotter. Our editors are constantly trying out new products and speaking to experts to determine the best of all things beauty, and hair dryers are among the most tested. Ahead, read up on how we tested, reviewed, and determined the best hair dryers for seamless drying and styling pleasure.

Comfortable in operation, its attachments are simple to use, plus the hair dryer can automatically adjust speed and temperature to optimum levels for creating specific styles. I've tried a lot of different blow dry brushes, but this one is the first that I've truly loved using on my hair. Even on the lowest heat setting of other blow dry brushes, my hair would often feel frizzy and flat. With the HyperAIR my hair is shiny and bouncy, rivaling something I'd pay for at a salon.

Brushing and styling my hair with the round brush attachment while also drying, however, took approximately 15 minutes for a simple and neat hairdo. The Shark Style iQ certainly lives up to its claims of being super-quick to dry hair. On the fastest setting, it took 3 minutes and 56 seconds to get our damp, below-shoulder-length fine hair to completely dry.

To say this whole process is time-consuming and overly complex would be an understatement. There’s a lot of turning the dryer on and off, multiple wrapping attempts, waiting, holding curls and separating sections. The reason there are two curlers of the same size is because they each direct the airflow in different directions.

The AirWave is probably the easiest route to beachy waves; all you have to do is choose whether you want your hair to be curled to the left or the right, then feed your hair into the attachment and let this tool work its wavy magic. There are many different hair styling gadgets on the market that use top technology and promise wonderful results, but the HyperAIR is laden with features that really make it stand out. Though, the 2-inch wide barrels don't offer much real estate length-wise at only 6 inches long, which meant dividing long hair into smaller sections. I also found it a bit tasking to switch the barrels in order to curl hair in different directions.

It’s a more versatile appliance as it can transform between a hair dryer and a styling wand, plus, it’s lighter too. It might be a bit more expensive in the US and UK, but in Australia especially, the FlexStyle sits at a more affordable price – so you do the math. Because I have thick, wavy hair (and a lot of it, might I add), I’m used to setting aside over an hour to blow dry my hair, but with this hair dryer, my hair is no longer sopping wet within 30 minutes. That’s a win in my book, given that I’m usually standing in my bathroom for over an hour, hair dryer(begrudingly) in tow. This product is one of the more expensive hair dryers on the market right now, but in my opinion, it's worth every penny — especially now that it's on sale. Time is money, and this tool gets my hair dry faster than any other product I've tested.

To get the most out of these attachments, you should start by drying hair until it’s around 80% dry. The styling concentrator also works well, but it’s a staple attachment for most hair dryers and not unique to the Shark Speedstyle. You likely won’t have to use the latter two buttons as the SpeedStyle inherits the auto-adjustments from the much older Shark Style iQ hair dryer. You can still manually make adjustments if you need to, although I found letting the SpeedStyle do its thing can save a little time. Adding to the weight are five attachments that come with the SpeedStyle, and each one performs a specific task when drying and styling hair.
